Trains in Estonia

Estonia Trains
Estonia boasts a modern, efficient, and highly comfortable rail network operated primarily by the national carrier Elron. Whether you are traversing the country using an Interrail One Country Pass or hopping between tech hubs and medieval towns, Estonia's Stadler FLIRT trains offer seamless domestic travel equipped with free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and spacious seating.
🎫 Seat Reservations & Ticket Classes
Navigating seat reservations in Estonia is incredibly straightforward, though rules differ strictly between travel classes:
  • Standard Class (2nd Class): Seat reservations are not possible. Seating is entirely on a first-come, first-served basis. If you hold an Interrail Pass, you simply board the train and find an available seat. On popular routes during peak hours (like Friday evenings or Sunday afternoons), 2nd class can become crowded, and you may occasionally have to stand.
  • First Class (1st Class): Seat reservations are mandatory and included automatically when purchasing a 1st Class ticket. If you are traveling with an Interrail Pass, you can purchase a 1st Class upgrade directly from the onboard staff or at the station. First class features wider, adjustable leather seats, a quieter environment, and dedicated tables. [1, 2, 3]
  • Family Areas: For groups traveling together, Elron offers a specialized Elron Family Ticket that guarantees a reserved 5-seat section on long-distance diesel trains.
  • Where to Buy: Individual tickets can be purchased seamlessly via the Elron Website or the Elron Mobile App, which gives an automatic 15% discount compared to buying onboard.
πŸ•’ Travel Times & Schedules Between Major Cities
Estonia’s compact size means you can reach almost any corner of the country from the capital city within a few hours. Domestic express trains drastically cut down travel times on core lines.

🌍 International Baltic Connections
Connecting across the Baltic states by rail has undergone major improvements. You can easily coordinate travel down to Latvia and Lithuania using your rail passes:
  • Tallinn ↔ Riga (Latvia): You can travel between the two capitals in a single day using an integrated schedule with a smooth, coordinated transfer at the border town of Valga. The route uses Elron within Estonia and Vivi within Latvia. Seat reservations remain unavailable for the Latvian leg of this specific journey.
  • Tallinn ↔ Vilnius (Lithuania): This extended journey is possible via the same daily connection through Valga and Riga. Note that while Estonian and Latvian segments do not take 2nd-class reservations, the connecting LTG Link train between Riga and Vilnius requires a mandatory seat reservation.
