Trains in Montenegro

Known for its striking mountainous landscapes, deep gorges, and gorgeous Adriatic coastline, Montenegro offers one of Europe's most visually spectacular rail networks. Whether you are taking a local coastal train or embarking on the legendary international route to Serbia, navigating the country by rail is both highly affordable and scenic.
The domestic network is primarily operated by the national railway company, Railway Transport of Montenegro (ŽPCG).
⏱️ Travel Times & Fares Between Major Cities
The passenger rail network in Montenegro consists of two main lines intersecting at the capital city of Podgorica:
  1. The Bar–Podgorica–Bijelo Polje Line: Part of the famous Belgrade-to-Bar railway.
  2. The Podgorica–Nikšić Line: A dedicated domestic branch running northwest.
The table below outlines typical travel times and standard second-class ticket fares for direct domestic routes:

🎫 Seat Reservations & Pass Rules
Seat reservation rules vary significantly depending on whether you are traveling domestically or internationally.
Domestic Trains
  • Reservations: Not required or available for local domestic lines (e.g., traveling strictly between Bar, Podgorica, Nikšić, or Bijelo Polje).
  • How to Buy: Tickets are purchased directly at the station counter before departure or onboard from the conductor if the station lacks a ticket office.
International Trains (The Belgrade–Bar Line)
  • Reservations: Compulsory for all international trains running between Montenegro and Serbia.
  • Seat Reservation Fee: A flat fee of €3.00 applies to standard first or second-class seats.
  • Night Train / Sleeper Supplements: If you take the overnight train, you must purchase a couchette or sleeper berth supplement on top of your base fare:
    • 6-Berth Couchette: €8.00
    • 4-Berth Couchette: €12.00
    • 3-Bed Sleeper (Tourist): €16.00
    • 2-Bed Sleeper (Double): €24.00
    • 1-Bed Sleeper (Single): €48.00
Rail Pass Validity (Interrail)
  • Interrail Global Passes are fully accepted in Montenegro.
  • There is no One-Country Pass available specifically for Montenegro.
  • Value Tip: Given that domestic tickets cost less than €8.00, it is usually much cheaper to buy point-to-point tickets out of pocket rather than burning a travel day on a multi-country rail pass.
🗺️ Booking & International Connections
You can check updated timetables and purchase international digital tickets online via the official ŽPCG Booking Portal. Always make sure to print out your digital sleeper or couchette tickets before arriving at the station. Serbia is currently the only country with a direct passenger rail connection to Montenegro.
