LuxembourgThe Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of Europe's small countries - 51 miles long and 32 miles wide, encompassing 999 square miles - a little smaller than the state of Rhode Island. The Grand Duchy once dominated an area nearly 300 times its current size. In more recent times, as well as in the past, Luxembourg's fate and fortunes have been linked with those of Belgium. The forces of French king Louis XIV conquered the city of Luxembourg in the middle of the 17th century. Subsequent fortifications built by the French and succeeding conquerers earned the city the title "Gibraltar of the North." © 2009, The Globe Pequot Press, LaVerne Ferguson-Kosinski Information by Europe by Eurail

Train Travel in Luxembourg and Luxembourg Rail Maps
The city of Luxembourg is served by a single railway station located conveniently in the city center. Connections can be made directly to Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland from the station. Luxembourg Central Station is actually located in what historians call the "new city." From 1855 to 1866, when the first rails were laid, the gorge of the Alzette River remained too wide to be bridged. Consequently, the rail station was established on the far side of the gorge opposite the city as it existed then, and the new section of the city began to develop around it. The station has three platforms serving five tracks. The Luxembourg national railways accepts the multicountry Eurail passes. © 2009, The Globe Pequot Press, LaVerne Ferguson-Kosinski Information by Europe by Eurail
