BelgiumBelgium may be small in size but it is large in its significance to the European Community. Belgium played an important role in creating the European Union, which now comprises 27 members. Perhaps not as well known is Belgium's significant gastronomic role in western Europe. After all, it was the Flemish Benedictine monks who invented beer, and the beers considered to be "the best" are the ones still brewed traditionally in Belgian monasteries. Restaurants of the Ardennes are well-known for their wild game, and the coastal restaurants serve some of the finest North Sea fish and shellfish dishes. A not-so-well-known culinary fact about Belgium: the ratio of restaurants to population is equal to that of France. © 2009, The Globe Pequot Press, LaVerne Ferguson-Kosinski Information by Europe by Eurail.

Train Travel in Belgium and Belgium Rail Maps
The Belgian railways were the first to be constructed on the continent of Europe, and Belgian Railways (NMBS/SNCB) is said to operate one of the densest rail networks in the world (3,454 kilometers). Brussels has three train stations along its main line: one in the north (Gare du Nord), one in the South (Gare du Midi), and a midcity underground station (Gare Centrale). EuroCity trains and the major express trains do not stop in the central station. Change at either the north or south station and then transfer to a local train if Gare Centrale is your destination. The Belgian Railways accepts a variety of Eurail passes. © 2009, The Globe Pequot Press, LaVerne Ferguson-Kosinski Information by Europe by Eurail
